complete randomness
Here are a few completely random things on my mind at this moment that I just need to say...
*My knee hurts. Like really hurts. Cold fronts, arthrititis and trying to exercise just aren't cooperating. This is the same knee I messed up my freshman year of high school playing basketball and then again in college.
*I am craving eating-out-food... fried chicken, pizza, steak... all stuff that would be faster to go get than to fix from scratch, plus I don't have the ingredients which means a trip to the grocery store with two kids. blah.
*I think Kathryn is going to have a pirate themed birthday party. Seriously. We have to have maps to everything and every boat is the Jolly Roger. Thank you Jake & the Neverland Pirates.
*Kathryn yelled at Dixon to get down from the bookshelf where the fish is. So what did he do? He jumped up on top of the TV stand which is about three feet higher than what he was.
*Andrew is rearranging my kitchen chairs.
*I promised Eric I would fix a lasagna this week. I knew I had some frozen still. It is from July. Yeah like 8 months ago... it is going out with the trash this week.
*I knew peanuts were "good" for you because of the protein. But oh my... they are high in calories. Not that I am actually counting like I should, but still, if I was...
*You can always fix breakfast for dinner when your other plans fall through. And such I must do.

things Kathryn is teaching me
It is amazing if you pay attention, like really pay attention, and think about what a normal conversation with a two year old can teach you.
Kathryn has started praying at meals, saying "our amens". Her prayer goes like this, "Dear God, thank you for this day; thank you for this food; amen." Kind of reminds me of the Prayer of Derek. But this is her prayer whether it is a meal time or bed time. We try to tell her at bed time she can pray about other things... for playing with friends, or thanking God for Daddy, Mommy & Andrew. But she still says the same thing. She used to say, "Dear God, thank you for this day. Bless Daddy and Mommy and Kathryn and Andrew and Daddy. Amen." at bedtime. Anyway, after she prays she says, "Now it is your turn Daddy" or Mommy, depending on who's there. Sometimes at meal time we all have to pray, including Andrew. So I got thinking. How often do I pray during the day? Only at meal time & bed time? Seems that way most days, and most days, honestly, it is only with Kathryn. She will correct us at meal times if we forget to say thanks for the food. Even if she has already done it, we have to also. How true this is. Just because I pray for something or Eric prays, doesn't mean that it is done. One prayer may not be enough. How often do we give thanks only once, instead of daily. I mean, I did thank God when Eric got his early bonus. But how often do I give thanks that he has a job that gives yearly bonuses and raises. Or even has a job at all.
Then comes my anger. We are reading James in our small group bible study. The middle of chapter 1 deals with anger. James 1:20.. "because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires." I yell. I will admit it. And if you have been around me with the kiddos for any amount of time, you already know this. I have a temper. Boy, do I have a temper. And I do take it out on Kathryn more than I should. Sometimes I hear from the little voice, "Mommy, you don't yell. It is not nice for you to yell at me." My response usually goes something like, "well, if you would obey Mommy, I wouldn't have to yell at you." Then I hear, "But that's not nice." in this little pathetic voice. Then after reading this verse over and over for two weeks, it dawned on me. Yes, the anger doesn't do anything for my life, but it isn't only my life that is affected. It is Kathryn's. It is Andrew's. I'm not doing any good for them by yelling like a mad woman. Yes, she can frustrate the crap out of me sometimes, but that really isn't a good reason to blow up. And now, Andrew is on the move. and climbing. and pulling knives out of the drawer. and just being a stinker. I have to stop the crazy yelling before he gets into the "terrible two" stage. I think this reflects my discipling techniques. I need to change something.
So maybe the praying more often will help with the anger.
"Mommy. That's a stop sign. You have to stop." or "We have to wait for the green light to come on. Then we can go." How quickly she has picked up on this. So since she loves to point out stop signs, I think I am going to make me a handheld one to work with her at home. Maybe if I show her the stop sign when she is bouncing off the couches and walls, I can do a word-sign recognization tool thingy with her. Also, a friend of mine has started with her toddlers doing "practice sitting still" time and she says it has started to work. So I may add that to the list of things to try.
I'm sure there are other things that I can learn from her if I just give her more attention. But I need to work on these two big ones for now.

A's 1st bday (part 2)
Finally I'm getting to part 2 of his birthday!
We went to Georgia to celebrate with my side of the family and to meet our new niece!
It was such beautiful weather that Nana let Andrew play with a birthday present before we started the celebration... a bubble mower! Andrew wasn't walking very well at this point, but I think I'm going to let him try it today and see how he does.
Wonderful Aunt Sarah decorated a Mickey Mouse cookie that Nana made.
Andrew also got a Tonka Truck from Aunt Sarah & Uncle Randy! I think Uncle Randy picked this out so Andrew wouldn't steal his from Nana's house.
Kathryn did an amazing job singing Happy Birthday to Andrew.
Andrew wasn't too sure about the cookie. He even tried it with a fork.
Such a happy birthday boy!
And he even tried it with his toes. Needless to say, he did get a bath after this.
And our new precious niece Chloe!
It was a quick trip down and back but we enjoyed the time with family. Now on to life with two toddlers!

A's 1st bday (part 1)
Okay so by now he has been 1 for a couple of weeks. I've been busy. I'm now a proud mommy of TWO toddlers! Agh! Plus I'm a new aunt! My brother & his wife welcomed a new little girl the day after Andrew's birthday. And Eric's sister is due in a few weeks. There's lots of birthdays and babies in my life right now.
So Andrew turned one. We were going to have one big family party in Georgia due to my sis-in-law being due so close to Andrew's bday (actually her due date was A's bday). But my dad got sick and things progressed with my niece. So we didn't go. That weekend anyway. Eric's parents were able to come up for the weekend and then Saturday morning Eric's sis & family decided to drive down also. We then got the crazy idea... hey we were finally going to dedicate Andrew in a few weeks, but there's family here, let's do it tomorrow! We made the necessary phone call and got us in the line up for church the next morning.
Sunday after church we grilled out and I made a cake.
Even though we went with a Mickey Mouse theme, we had decided his "big" gift would be Thomas the train stuff. When we go to Barnes & Noble he will play with the train for as long as we would let him stand there. Plus we figured it was a good investment. Wasn't something he was going to grow out of by next summer.
After we did presents and the kiddos napped, we went for the cake.
Andrew wasn't quite sure what to do with it at first. He would stick his fingers in it, but didn't eat it until he realized there was stuff on his fingers that he didn't want there. But he did enjoy it.
Kathryn, Caleb & Esther also enjoyed the cake. And the Mickey Mouse table. If you notice next to Kathryn is a box of Handy Manny tools. Even though this was Andrew's present from Grandma & Grandpa, Kathryn has laid claim to them.

He walks!!!
We finally caught Andrew walking on video last night!!!
Oh yeah... he had a birthday too. I'm getting there.
