one smart little cookie

I knew Kathryn was smart, but didn't realize how much she knew until Eric was home for a few days and kept pointing out all those things that I hear but don't pick up as new stuff. At 18 months she can count to 5 and sometimes 10. She can get to five without help especially if there are actual things to count.

And the alphabet! That came out of the blue one day. Right before Christmas she was playing with her keyboard (our old one that used to have a cord on it that we cut off so she could play with it and not mommy's laptop) and she pointed to the O and said "O". I hadn't seen her do that before but Eric said he had. So we tried a couple more letters... M, S, T... knew all of those. Her favorite letters are O and W. W is just "double", but she will pick it out anywhere. We were watching football this weekend (oh and she knows touchdown with hand signals and all). The game on was the Oregon vs Ohio State game and they zoomed in on a Oregon player and she said O. She also kept showing us the the U in Best Buy. Most of the letters she can point out are uppercase, but she can get the lower case ones that look the same... o, s, u, m and sometimes t. The letters I know she can point out are O, R, S, T, U, B, M, N, W, A, E, Y, and sometimes H, L, & K. I think that's not bad for 18 months. Maybe I'm wrong. The sad part is I'm not sure I've been the one to teach her any of those. Her favorite show is Super WHY! on PBS. Anytime the tv is on she thinks we are going to watch an episode. Thank goodness for a DVR.

She had her 18 month check up last week and is up to 24ish pounds and 33ish inches. They used to give me a check up sheet with that info on it but they didn't do that this time and I had to go by memory when we got home. I have no short term memory right now.

I'll post Christmas stuff once I get pictures off the camera.

Kathryn's first hair cut

I know I said I was going to let her hair grow out because I didn't want to have to deal with bangs. But I had bangs until high school right? So they can't be that bad. Kathryn did WONDERFUL!!!! No crying, no tears, no squirming! I think the fact that she fell asleep before we got there and was still a little drowsy helped. Plus she got to sit in an airplane (the most fun thing for her right now) and the nice stylist hit play on the Elmo video. Thanks to Rachel for recommending a kid's only place.

Here is the evidence...

She still looks like a girl, which was one reason I kept pushing it off. Her hair still does the little flip around the ears so it makes it cute still.

this weekend

We really didn't do much this weekend, but Kathryn was doing funny things. So here are the two that we captured.

Kathryn decided at some point in the past week that it was fun to change the snowman's boppy (i.e. diaper). She would get one of the changing pads I keep in the diaper bag, a diaper, and lay the snowman down. The funny thing was to watch her try to get the changing pad straight and flat. That alone may have taken two or three minutes.

Then Daddy taught her something new...

the demise of the reindeer

Last year Kathryn tried to eat the reindeer...
this year she tried to ride him.

Poor little reindeer. He may never stand the same again.

a little bit of everything

As I changed the background I noticed that there were things missing from the previous posts. How silly of me to forget something so important as updating the blog more regularly for all of you readers, all five or six of you!

So let's start back in November. We went to Rome for Thanksgiving to spend some time with the Payne's. We were lucky that my Grandfather was in Chattanooga visiting the family of his lady friend. Kathryn finally got to meet her Great Grandpa Payne.

While we were in Rome, Kathryn also discovered the great joy that leaves in the fall bring. Our yard as one little tree bush thing and we only get leaves in the yard from our neighbor's two trees that really aren't that big. She had a blast with all the Rome leaves!

She also had her first true Payne experience. I can't say much because it is not appealing to me in the least. But for some reason the Payne's love olives and will fight you for the last one. Granddad had to see if she was a true Payne.

Oh and when we got home, she mastered the art of Mommy's flip flops.

She did wonderful on the trip home. We made a surprise stop in Stone Mountain to eat lunch with Eric's parents before they took off for Israel. We hadn't planned on stopping, but we left Rome a little later than planned. Our stomachs were asking for food right about the exit we would take off of I-20 to get up to Eric's parents. We knew church would not be out yet, so we headed up to surprise them. We had a great lunch and Kathryn got to see both sets of grandparents in one day!

Okay so now on to December. Let's see where to begin. We tried this past Sunday to do a Christmas family picture. It didn't turn out so hot, and not realizing it before I printed 75 Christmas cards, is a little embarrassing. You'll see when you get yours. If you can't figure it out, good! Anyway, here is Kathryn's cute picture that will also be on the card.

My mom came up in November and we tried to get Kathryn's Christmas picture done then. Eric & I had decided not to do a professional family portrait now since in less than 2 months there should be an addition to our family. We figured the family would understand us wanting to save a little money so they would patiently wait for an updated family picture. This was the only shot we got of Kathryn in her Christmas dress.

I have only a few items and people left to shop for. Most of what has been bought is already wrapped. They are sitting behind closed doors. I let Kathryn try to help me wrap one morning. I would get something mostly wrapped and as I finished, she would start unwrapping. So the presents are hidden until I think I can stash them under the tree and she won't notice. So I'm guessing Christmas Eve.

I have a couple of other cute pics from the past week or so, but they are still on the camera, awaiting downloading onto the computer. You'll just have to wait.

my little helper

Thursday is typically my cleaning day... laundry, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, etc. Kathryn usually helps with the dusting, but today she decided she wanted to be a little more helpful...

nap time

Usually nap time is more for me lately than it is for Kathryn. She will lie down but not without some sort of protest. This afternoon we were playing on the floor, which for obvious reasons does not happen very much lately. My back started to hurt so I went and sat on the couch. Kathryn came over and climbed in my lap. I then got a little bit of a hug. She said "nap" and pointed to her room. I did not hesitate to take her shoes off and head to her room. She then said "baby... nap". Baby is her glow worm, or one of the other babies that may be in her crib. I laid her down and with two minutes she was asleep. The was the first time she actually asked for a nap. my precious little girl...
