one smart little cookie

I knew Kathryn was smart, but didn't realize how much she knew until Eric was home for a few days and kept pointing out all those things that I hear but don't pick up as new stuff. At 18 months she can count to 5 and sometimes 10. She can get to five without help especially if there are actual things to count.

And the alphabet! That came out of the blue one day. Right before Christmas she was playing with her keyboard (our old one that used to have a cord on it that we cut off so she could play with it and not mommy's laptop) and she pointed to the O and said "O". I hadn't seen her do that before but Eric said he had. So we tried a couple more letters... M, S, T... knew all of those. Her favorite letters are O and W. W is just "double", but she will pick it out anywhere. We were watching football this weekend (oh and she knows touchdown with hand signals and all). The game on was the Oregon vs Ohio State game and they zoomed in on a Oregon player and she said O. She also kept showing us the the U in Best Buy. Most of the letters she can point out are uppercase, but she can get the lower case ones that look the same... o, s, u, m and sometimes t. The letters I know she can point out are O, R, S, T, U, B, M, N, W, A, E, Y, and sometimes H, L, & K. I think that's not bad for 18 months. Maybe I'm wrong. The sad part is I'm not sure I've been the one to teach her any of those. Her favorite show is Super WHY! on PBS. Anytime the tv is on she thinks we are going to watch an episode. Thank goodness for a DVR.

She had her 18 month check up last week and is up to 24ish pounds and 33ish inches. They used to give me a check up sheet with that info on it but they didn't do that this time and I had to go by memory when we got home. I have no short term memory right now.

I'll post Christmas stuff once I get pictures off the camera.

Ha ha...When I read that line about having no memory, my first thought was "Oh yeah, I forgot about that part of pregnancy!" and then I laughed at myself for forgetting about forgetting! Okay, maybe I'm the only one that got a giggle out of that. Anyway, I think it's pretty impressive all those letters and numbers Kathryn knows! I like Super WHY! It's a pretty cute show. At the very least, you can take credit for encouraging her to watch the show that taught her everything she knows! :)

Hey Jen, smart and cute. Better keep your eye on her;-) You may want to rent from the library Letter Factory by Leapfrog. It taught Grant all the sounds of the alphabet. It reminds me of Super Why so I thought I would mention it.

Oh yeah...she's definitely ahead. Nathan started early like that with letters and was reading well before he started pre-K. Caroline on the other hand has just gotten interested in letters.

Ok...I meant that he was reading "pretty good"...not "alot before"...but that could work, too, I suppose.
